People with low literacy and communication difficulties face significant challenges in accessing information about emergencies, making it more difficult to recognise and respond to risks in their community.
It is important that emergency information is available in a number of formats for people with literacy difficulties. One of those formats is Easy English.
Scope’s Accessible Information Service has worked with Country Fire Authority Victoria, Red Cross Australia and Country Fire Service South Australia over the last 5 years. As a result there are now many resources available in Easy English about:
- Fire safety
- Emergency planning
- Flood recovery
- Disaster recovery
- Incident response
All of the following resources are available online.
- REDiPlan information book and REDiPlan workbook. The 4 steps to plan for an emergency.
- Coping with a major personal crisis. Helping children and young people cope with crisis.
- Cleaning up after an emergency. Dealing with wind and water damage.
