The festival was held to increase community connectedness and provide an opportunity for people to come together

City of Greater Dandenong in partnership with The Bridge, Emerson School, Noble Park Secondary College and Dandenong High recently hosted a festival for all abilities in October called ‘InterGREAT’!

This festival was held to increase community connectedness and provide an opportunity for people to come together through music.

I was lucky enough to attend because I was completing a placement as part of my Diploma of Case Management at Scope’s Community Inclusion Service in the Eastern region. It was a fantastic opportunity to support and learn about the people that Scope supports.

The day began with a concert that was held inside The Castle. It was so great to see so many different high school students get up on stage and put on a great performance, and to see the services such as Scope keep the entertainment and talent levels high!

Many different activities were held during the day for all attendees, including high school students and people with disabilities from different services.

All activities were accessible, including:

  • face painting,
  • hair braiding
  • talent show
  • Zumba
  • even a concert!

Wheelchair soccer and basketball games were exhilarating events which gave people an opportunity to discover what it’s like playing sport when you are in a wheelchair.

For those who did not attend the concert, outside the hall there were many more great activities to join in such as a jumping castle and a traditional African drumming class.

Activities such as the jumping castle were enjoyed by many who attended the festival

The best part of the day for me was when Brodie Tyler from Scope’s Chelsea Day and Lifestyle Options service won the talent competition! Brodie played the keyboard and sang a fun version of ‘Short Skirt, Long Jacket’ by Cake. He did this with the help of Gavin Robson, Ju Young Lee and David Quirino on back up guitar and vocals. A deserving win!

Brodie Tyler won first prize in the talent competition for his rendition of ‘Short Skirt, Long Jacket’!

After speaking to a number of individuals that Scope supports, it was clear that everyone had a great day and were happy with the many activities that everyone was able to participate in.

Two Scope bands, the ‘Party Pak’ from Chelsea’s Day and Lifestyle Options service and ‘Skullfork’ band from Bass Coast Life Choices also performed on the day.

I spoke to the members from the pop-group ‘Party Pak’, who all enjoyed getting to go on stage and play a few songs. Brodie Vearing from the group said “it was a great day. Cake and the kayaks rock!!”

A special mention must go to show organiser Nick Karlas from City of Greater Dandenong’s Youth and Family Services, for ensuring everything ran smoothly.

Thank you also to Dandenong Council for a successful day of fun for people of all abilities.

I can’t wait for next year’s interGREAT Festival!
