A legacy that is providing the gift of mobility

A generous gift left in the Will of a grateful parent is helping Scope provide therapy services to children in the Barwon area.

Many of our generous supporters are parents or family members who have made donations or left a gift in their will to express their gratitude for the way Scope’s support has benefited their loved one.

Now, thanks to one of those parents, children in the Barwon area can participate in targeted therapy activities aimed at improving mobility through access to, and inclusion in, recreational and sporting activities.

Supported by funds from the Anthony John Nielson Bequest, named in memory of the donor’s son, Scope recently conducted a ‘Learn to Ride’ program. Three children aged 7 – 9 years successfully participated in the program which was held at Scope’s Barwon therapy centre in Belmont and at a local community park where they learnt to ride in a safe and supportive environment.

“Young children with a disability can find riding a bike incredibly empowering and supportive of independence, fitness, and social inclusion. It has been fantastic watching the children learn to ride their bike and discover the sense of freedom, achievement and mobility that riding offers.” said Marie Byrne, Therapy Team Leader for the Barwon region.

These sessions have made a huge difference to each of the children who attended. Not only did they have a lot of fun, but they also learned a valuable life skill and gained in self-belief and confidence as their riding improved.

More Learn to Ride programs funded by the Bequest are planned, as are Balloon Football events for younger children and a series of ‘Set for Sport’ activities aimed at increasing access to community sporting opportunities for 5–8 year-olds.

It’s never too early to start thinking about the legacy you could leave behind. Leaving a gift in your Will is often the easiest way to have the biggest impact on the lives of people supported by Scope. Naturally family, friends and loved ones come first. Even a small residual amount or percentage of your Estate could create a future full of possibilities for people living with disability.
