Kim’s COVID-19 vaccination experience
Kim Grey shares her experience receiving the COVID-19 vaccination, and why you should do the same.
Scope together with Aspen Medical had opened a COVID-19 vaccination hub in Shannon Park, Geelong to offer an alternative for vaccination access for people with disability. Scope customers and staff had access to the hub, in addition to the in-reach program into our Supported Independent Living homes.
Kim, who is 49 years old has attended Scope’s Shannon Park Day and Lifestyle Options (DLO) for about 25 years now. For Kim, getting the vaccine was an easy decision as she wanted life to go back to normal, without any interruptions to her DLO program. The vaccine also allows Kim to not get sick with the virus and to still hangout with her friends and family.
“Get vaccinated, it was easy, and you will keep yourself, your family, friends safe from the virus, so you don’t have to stay home,” Kim says, excited to receive her second dose of the vaccination.
Kim chose to receive her first vaccination at the Shannon Park vaccination hub instead of one of the larger hubs as it provided clinical vaccine expertise and disability service experience all in one. It delivered a familiar, calm, and non-threatening environment.
“I know the people here; I feel more comfortable and safer. Everyone with a disability should come and get vaccinated at Shannon Park hub”
Amanda Handley, DLO Manager for the West division has supported Kim since the beginning and was amazed by how comforting the staff were at the hub.
“She was scared to have her needle, but the nurse giving the injection was great and made her feel safe and comfortable, and she had Maryann, Shannon Park DLO coordinator with her to hold her hand”.
“The Aspen Medical Team brought with them their clinical expertise as well as the Scope Approach. This approach was observed by myself and valued by all who attended the hub.”
“It was great to be able to provide vaccination access to Scope customers, staff, and primary carers of people living with a disability in the Geelong community.”
Feedback from everyone that attended the hub at Shannon park, expressed the benefit and relief of being able to access their vaccination in an accessible, comfortable, and inclusive environment.
