What is Short Term Respite?
Short Term Respite is where you spend a short amount of time living with others. Under the NDIS, Short Term Respite (previously Short Term Accommodation) replaces Respite Care.
It’s a great option if you want to live independently one day, but you don’t feel ready to make the big move just yet.
By spending short stays with us, you can see what it’s like to live with others. You learn skills like sharing, cooking, and socialising. Even better, you can book your stay at the same time as your friends.
Our Short Term Respite is available for people with physical, intellectual, or multiple disabilities. We have homes throughout Victoria for both children and adults (note that children and adults are accommodated separately).
Why choose Scope for Short Term Respite?
As a trusted leader in Supported Independent Living, our team has plenty of experience in helping people with complex support needs to gain confidence in and around the home.
We can also help you get the right funding in your NDIS plan to use our Short Term Respite service. To stay with us, you’ll just need NDIS funding for Short Term Respite and Assistance (respite) or Social and Community Participation (vacations).
We’ll help make your transition to independent living as easy and enjoyable as possible.

FAQs
What is Short Term Accommodation for NDIS participants?
Short Term Accommodation (STA), also referred to as respite, is an NDIS-funded support that provides temporary accommodation and care for people with disability away from their usual home. It can give participants an opportunity to try new experiences and work toward greater independence, while also providing a break for carers or family members, subject to individual circumstances and NDIS funding.
How is Short Term Accommodation funded through the NDIS?
STA is generally funded under the Core Supports budget in an NDIS plan, under the Assistance with Daily Life support category. The amount of STA funding available will depend on each person's individual plan, their assessed support needs, and what the NDIA determines to be reasonable and necessary. A support coordinator or local area coordinator may be able to help you understand what is included in your current plan.
What does Short Term Accommodation typically include?
Short Term Accommodation generally includes temporary accommodation, meals, and personal support such as assistance with daily living tasks and personal care. The specific supports available will depend on the provider, the property, and the individual's NDIS plan. Scope's STA homes aim to provide a comfortable, safe, and person-centred experience, though the exact activities and supports available may vary by location.
Who is Short Term Accommodation suited to?
STA may be suited to NDIS participants who have Short Term Accommodation funding included in their plan and who would benefit from a temporary supported stay away from their usual home. It may also benefit carers or family members who support the participant on an ongoing basis. Suitability will depend on individual circumstances, and any questions about eligibility or funding are best directed to the NDIA or a local area coordinator.
What is the difference between STA and respite care?
Short Term Accommodation (STA) and respite care generally refer to the same type of NDIS support — temporary supported accommodation away from a person's usual home. "Respite" is an older term still used by many families and carers. The NDIS formally refers to this support as Short Term Accommodation, funded under the Core Supports budget.
Can I choose activities during a Short Term Accommodation stay?
Where possible, Scope's approach to STA is person-centred, with the aim of planning each stay around a participant's goals, interests, and daily routines. Support workers may be able to assist with community outings, social activities, or hobbies, subject to the activities available at the specific location and what is included in the individual's NDIS plan.
How do I find out more about Scope's Short Term Accommodation options?
