There are a range of inclusive arts programs designed to support people with disability to explore creativity, develop skills, and connect with others. These can include visual arts, creative writing, storytelling, and performance. Programs vary in structure and may be run by disability providers, community arts organisations, or through partnerships between the two.
Kaleidoscope is an inclusive arts program run by Scope that has been supporting people with disability to explore their creative side since 2006. Through partnerships with community arts organisations, Kaleidoscope offers budding and established artists the opportunity to develop their craft and showcase their artwork at an annual exhibition. The program is open to Scope clients, and participants may also have the opportunity to sell their artwork through the exhibition.
Telescope is a Scope program that supports people with disability to write and tell their stories. Run in partnership with community organisations across Melbourne and Victoria, Telescope may offer mentorships, workshops, writing competitions, and readings events. Telescope is open to anyone with a disability who wants to explore storytelling — not just Scope clients. The program is supported by the City of Melbourne.
Participating in arts programs may support people with disability to build confidence, explore creative expression, develop communication and social skills, and connect with a wider arts community. Programs like Kaleidoscope and Telescope can also create opportunities to be recognised as an artist or writer. Individual experiences will vary depending on each person's goals and circumstances.
