Finding purpose in life is a journey we all strive for, yet for people like Isaac, this journey is often fraught with barriers to equality, opportunity, and to live more independently.

Born with a rare disorder impacting him physically and intellectually, Isaac has consistently strived to live life to the fullest. Regardless of his condition, he firmly believes in his ability to achieve his life goals, just like his two older brothers.

Despite concern that Isaac might require lifelong assistance, his determination to fully engage in life was always evident. Isaac worked hard in high school at a specialised school, where he made great friends. However, upon graduation, Isaac was uncertain about his exact pathway. As Isaac explains:

“I didn’t know what I was going to do after finishing school. Where I would go, or what I would do.”

Everyone deserves the opportunity to find their place in the world. Your gift today of $85 can help provide employment pathways for many talented individuals like Isaac, who are eager to contribute and belong in their community.

Isaac's passion for sports led his dad, Ian, to inquire about a volunteer role at Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre. Much to their surprise, the centre proposed Isaac join their team. Unsure of the best fit, Joanne sought support from Scope’s Customised Employment team.

Scope’s Customised Employment service is more than just job placement; it's about empowering individuals to find purpose and fulfillment in work, while also accommodating their unique support needs. Julie May, one of our Customised Employment Practice Team Leaders explains:

"The workforce is highly structured, posing a challenge for individuals with disabilities. Scope’s Customised Employment service focuses on a client’s capacity and fostering their self-advocacy skills. We tailor aspects of new and existing roles to accommodate both the client and the business.”

Working closely with Isaac, Scope's Customised Employment team identified his interest and motivations. Then the team collaborated with the Aquatic and Recreation centre and together a role was tailored to Isaac's needs.

Isaac has begun his employment journey working two days a week at the centre, in a role created to suit his interests, abilities and bubbly personality, as well as the needs of the centre.

Since starting, his confidence has soared, and he's embraced being part of a team. Isaac shares:

“I enjoy working. The people in the café and the customers are nice. I hope to continue working and learning new things, and one day live independently.”

With the Australian labour force participation rate for people with disabilities aged 15–64 years at 53.4%, compared to 84.1% for those without disabilities, Scope is deeply concerned about other people, like Isaac, missing out on similar employment opportunities.

There is an urgent need to expand job opportunities that include customised roles, for people with disabilities. We know it is possible to create roles that suit each individual's capabilities so that they can experience independence in the workplace. Isaac serves as a perfect example.

Your generous gift of $85 today will help us continue creating employment opportunities like Isaac’s where diversity is not just accepted but valued. Roles where people can contribute and know they belong.

Thank you for believing that regardless of circumstance, everyone deserves the opportunity to find their purpose and demonstrate their abilities and potential in the workplace.

P.S. Your donation of $85 can help Scope provide support and opportunities for people like Isaac to experience equality, opportunity, and independence in the workforce. Thank you for your generosity.
