Creating a more inclusive Moomba
Greater inclusion for people with disability at Melbourne’s Moomba Festival is the aim of ‘Everyone’s Moomba’, a partnership between the Future Focus Group and City of Melbourne.
The team behind the project will undertake a number of activities in 2019 with a view to improving Moomba Festival’s inclusion for people with disability in future years.
Scope is pleased to support the project and will be sharing the Everyone’s Moomba marquee at the Moomba festival on Friday 8 March. At the marquee, the Future Focus Group will look to engage with people with disability (and their families) in order to understand the challenges for people with disability and the opportunities for better access and inclusion at future festivals.
The Everyone’s Moomba project group will work with City of Melbourne to look for opportunities to enhance the Moomba experience for people with a disability and their families; exploring the events existing facilities, services and experience offerings for those with accessibility requirements.
Scope CEO Dr Jennifer Fitzgerald says that Scope supports the project’s aim to create a more inclusive Moomba.
“Scope is pleased to partner with Everyone’s Moomba as they work toward a more inclusive Moomba festival that removes barriers and allows everybody to get involved,” said Jennifer.
“Everyone has the right to enjoy Victoria’s rich and diverse cultural scene. With 1 in 5 Australians living with a disability, inclusion and accessibility need to be high on the agenda for public events like Moomba.
“Scope encourages people with disability to have their say help to create a more inclusive Moomba for future years.”
As well as the community engagement planned for the Everyone’s Moomba marquee, the group have organised a water ski exhibition event for athletes with disability to participate in. Two champion water ski athletes will feature in a series of exhibition events throughout the Moomba Master’s program, promoting accessible water sports to the community.
The Everyone’s Moomba marquee will be at Moomba 2019 on each day of the festival – Friday 8 March to Monday 11 March. It is located adjacent to the water sports accessible viewing area, on the banks of the Yarra (on Boathouse Drive, opposite Palm Lawn).
Even if you’re not heading along to the festival this long weekend, you can still have your say about your experience of Moomba as a person with disability. Everyone’s Moomba welcomes feedback on accessibility and inclusion at Moomba through social media using #everyonesmoomba and #moombafestival.
