Have a safe and happy holiday season

We recently celebrated International Day of People With a Disability, which was a great time to reflect on the achievements of people with disability.

This year, I’ve been impressed by the resilience and achievements of our customers in the face of the global pandemic.

In particular, our Supported Independent Living (SIL) customers have displayed great creativity. They came up with so many ways to have fun, do what they love and practice self care.

I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our staff as well, for their commitment to everyone’s safety and wellbeing. Everyone was responsive to the evolving situation, making sure they were on top of the guidelines as they changed.

As a whole team, we responded in a planned and coordinated way. One of the key things we endeavoured to do was to ensure people understood what was happening, and what their choices and responsibilities were.

To do this, we provided Easy English resources and social stories, and Key Word Sign videos to support communication about Coronavirus, social distancing and being CovidSafe. These were also shared with the wider sector.

We also ensured staff had the resources, training and PPE needed to deliver supports safely.

We made adjustments to our services, making sure customers had access to essential supports and services. One key initiative was the introduction of Telepractice, delivering therapy through a range of online channels.

It’s heartening to note that our efforts have been successful. To date, we have had a just small number of staff test positive and only one customer test positive. All positive cases were identified quickly and contact tracing and quarantining implemented swiftly. There has been no cross infection or spread from these cases within our services. To date, none of our SIL residents have tested positive.

We could not have done this without the cooperation and support of all our families, carers and partners. Thank you for doing your part to help keep everyone safe.

We look forward to 2021 with hope, and the knowledge that we can continue to face any challenge together.

On behalf of the Scope team, I wish you and your family a safe and joyous festive season.

Kind regards,

Dr Jennifer Fitzgerald
