Scope ICON take on the Melbourne Marathon
by Jye Yates.
On the 16th of October 2016 a group from Scope ICON in Bendigo joined in to create ‘Scope Team Ability’ for the Melbourne Marathon.
In the months leading up to October, our group began our training sessions, which involved walking and driving our wheelchairs around Lake Neangar.
On the day we all caught taxis to the MCG, then went on our way to get to the starting line.
It was a great atmosphere, and we were motivated seeing people of all abilities having a crack.
Our team completed the 3km marathon, cheering for one another the whole way.
We got to enter the MCG for the last part of the marathon. It was amazing to see lots of seats filled by supporters cheering us on for the race to the finish line.
We are starting to do our training for this year’s marathon, to make sure we are as fit as possible to do even better than last year. My personal goal is to walk the end of the race through the MCG.
The thing that motivated me the most to do the marathon was to show people that even with a disability I can still achieve great things!
