We have proudly reopened our newly renovated Social Connections site in Carnegie -- unveiling a modern, inclusive space designed to support people with disability in building skills, friendships, and community connections.
Lavourne, a Social Connections client since Scope bought the site in 1993 to support people with cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities participate in life through day programs, said the space will help her achieve her goals, which include taking part in programs with more independence.
Connected to the legacy of the Dame Mary Herring Spastic Children’s Hostel and the Marathon Spastic Centre, Carnegie Social Connections is now a place where people come together by choice, build relationships, explore interests and belong.
“2026 brings a new beginning not just for Scope’s clients, but also for the wider Carnegie community,” said Amanda Handley, General Manager of Social Connections.
“Our enhanced Social Connections site will offer more flexibility and independence for the people who participate.”
The upgraded facility now features adult-focused spaces that promote accessibility, dignity, and learning. Enhancements include a new kitchen, a computer room, and dedicated areas for socialising and skill development -- all aligned with our new Social Connections design guide.
While renovations were underway, programs continued in the community, strengthening relationships with local organisations such as Phoenix Park Community Centre and our Glenallen team. These partnerships enriched the client experience and underscored the importance of community collaboration.
The reopening is part of our broader strategy to uplift Social Connections services across Victoria and New South Wales, ensuring every individual has the opportunity to participate in their community and live a fulfilling life.
Our Carnegie Social Connections offers a wide range of programs, including music therapy, sports, physical therapy, gardening, cooking, art, and more — all designed to empower individuals and foster meaningful connections.
