R U OK?
The 14th of September marks R U OK? Day, a significant reminder to check in with your friends, colleagues and loved ones, including those with a disability. It only takes a simple question to start a conversation – ‘Are you OK?’
As an adult with a communication difficulty, Mimari always wanted to be treated like other people her age, instead of often being ignored or feeling nervous in social situations. Since she began using Scope’s services, Mimari has found a new level of confidence to speak up and show us who she truly is.
Mimari uses various services including speech and physical therapies and our Customised Employment program. Mimari also participated in our research group and our Kaleidoscope Exhibition, where this year she won second prize.
“People often ignore me because I have a language disorder. My speech therapist, Anna, has given me confidence and taught me the right way to speak. Anna introduced me to both Kaleidoscope and Customised Employment. Without her, and Scope’s support, I wouldn’t have been as confident in myself as I am now.”
Despite being nervous at times, Mimari is excited to see what the future will hold for her. “I am very nervous and want to run away from new events that I wasn’t prepared for, but I am very excited to see where my potential will take me.”
Scope has had the privilege to know and support Mimari in many ways, and she reflected on what is important to her in the services she receives. “It is very important that service providers understand my needs because it allows me to be recognised as a person, instead of being invisible.”
Some of our loyal supporters had the chance to meet Mimari at the recently held 2024 Kaleidoscope Exhibition. The exhibition was supported by a grant from the Boroondara City Council.
