Working one-on-one with a Customised Employment Scout from Scope is a great place to start when embarking on this journey.

To get started with a Scope Scout and tap into all the benefits of personalised employment support, it’s important that you have the right level of funding in your NDIS plan.

If you’re new to all this, you can brush up on what Customised Employment is in a previous blog.

Why does funding matter?

Everyone has the right to work if they want to. It’s why we’ve made Scope’s Customised Employment service as inclusive as possible – but the thing is, you need employment goals in your NDIS plan and the right level of funding.

By securing the right funding before you get started, you’ll get more choice and control over what type of support you can access to meet your goals. And this hopefully translates into finding the right job or career for you, faster.

To avoid any funding obstacles, we encourage you to do plenty of preparation to ensure you have well defined employment goals. You should also get in touch with us so we know how best to support you with getting the right level of funding in your next NDIS plan. By doing some groundwork now, you will help to minimise lengthy delays if your plan needs an unscheduled review, or if you need a continuation of service – and, ultimately, all this planning will pave the way for you landing a great job.

How do I know if I have the right funding?

To access Scope’s Customised Employment service, you’ll need to have either NDIS or SLES funding under Capacity Building – “Finding and Keeping a Job”. You also need to be over 15 years old.

If you don’t have funding in this area of your plan, please get in touch so we can help you explore other options.

If you’re still in school or are a recent school leaver, and you’re ready to make the transition to work, you can access SLES funding through your NDIS plan. SLES funding helps young people reach their employment goals by building confidence, independence and job skills – which is exactly what Scope’s Customised Employment is designed to achieve.

SLES funding comes as a lump sum – you can use it for work experience and skills development in areas like time management, money handling, travel training, and taking instruction.

Want to switch to Customised Employment now?

If you have a long wait until your next scheduled NDIS meeting, you can apply for an unscheduled plan review so you can add your new employment goals.

We can help you prepare for this NDIS plan review. It’s a good idea to have a list of employment goals handy, as well as any training certificates, school reports, therapeutic assessments, work experience or volunteer work records and references.

Scope can help by providing a letter of support and a quote for our Customised Employment services, too.

How to get the most out of your funding

If you are new to the NDIS, knowing where to start can be daunting. We’ve broken it down into simple steps for you here. In a nutshell, you should:

  1. Work out if you are eligible.
  2. Do your research. Talk to the service providers or your support coordinator you want to access and ask if they can help advocate for the funding you need with a letter of support or a quote.
  3. Keep it real. Your goals will change as you grow, and your plan should change too. It’s a good idea to review your plan at least once each year.
  4. Perfect your plan.

We’ve even put together a tool to help you create a plan for your first meeting.

A final word on funding

Here at Scope, we firmly believe every person deserves the right to open employment. Our Customised Employment service exists to help people with disability find meaningful work – and, in doing so, improve the lives of both new employees and the people they work with.

Think of Customised Employment as a long-term investment in your future. If you’re keen to find a great, long-term job you love, then it’s definitely worth taking the time to make sure you have the right funding to make the most of this valuable service.
