How to make Easter egg hunts accessible for all
Whether it’s played in the neighbourhood park or in your own backyard, Easter egg hunts are a great way for the community to come together and have fun.
Painting has been a lifelong passion for client Pauline, and this month she is proudly celebrating her first solo exhibition.
Pauline’s parents were both artists and encouraged her to be creative from a young age. For as long as her family can remember, Pauline has loved to communicate in symbols and pictures, and of course, her art.
Now, Pauline's work titled Spring Series is being showcased in the City of Greater Dandenong's Emerging Art Exhibition Program at the Dandenong Civic Centre.
“I’m very excited and very proud and happy,” said Pauline. “I was in the newspaper not long ago – I’m famous!”
Spring Series is a collection of mixed media on canvas that represents the colours and movement of flowers during spring. It explores Pauline's connection to her garden, the seasons, and how she feels on any given day.
It was inspired by Pauline’s visit to the Lume Melbourne where she experienced Monet’s Garden.
Pauline lives in one of our Supported Independent Living homes in Dandenong, Victoria, where people with disability can live independently, manage daily activities, and participate in the local community in a supported environment.
Living in supported accommodation has seen Pauline's confidence soar. She is currently undertaking a cooking program, training to navigate public transport independently, and completing a Certificate in Transition to Employment with Marriot Support Services, which will lead to Certificate I in Work Education.
Anne-Marie, House Supervisor, said focusing on Pauline's holistic wellbeing, including community participation and skill development, is helping Pauline to achieve her goals.
“Pauline loves her family, works super hard, and wants to live her passion,” said Anne-Marie.
“The home is adorned with her paintings and everyone that visits and works here praises Pauline for her talents. She is very brave, from blank paper to canvas – some of them huge – Pauline does not hesitate to put paint to canvas.”
With her first solo exhibition under her belt, Pauline is continuing to dream big. Her goal is to one day sell her paintings and open a studio where she can teach other people living with disability to paint.
She will also continue to travel and visit art exhibits around Melbourne, adding that flowers are her favourite artwork.
“The flowers are beautiful; I can paint puppy dogs and fish and whales and it’s really good. I’ve got some hanging on the walls."
Pauline’s Spring Series is on display at the Dandenong Civic Centre until Wednesday 4 December. Find out more on the City of Greater Dandenong website.
Pauline is part of our 2024 International Day of People with Disability series which celebrates the theme ‘Amplifying the leadership of people with disability for an inclusive and sustainable future’.
From 28 November – 3 December, we're sharing the stories of just some of our leaders living with disability and clients who are dreaming big and achieving their goals.
