Scope welcomes ‘energetic and enthusiastic’ Therapy graduates

Recent university graduates eager to cut their teeth in the disability sector have enjoyed an intensive two-day workshop preparing them for their budding careers.

A group of seven participants from Scope’s Therapy Graduate Program came together from across Victoria to fine-tune key industry skills.

Brianna Pursell, a recent La Trobe alumna studying Masters of Speech Pathology, encouraged all potential applicants to “just go for it”.

“I really enjoyed it – it was a good way to make connections, see people face-to-face and bounce off each other,” Brianna said.

“The highlight for me was the knowledge of those presenting and knowing there was support from people who have been in the industry.”

Andrea Curran-Bennett, Occupational Therapy Team Leader, is one of those people. She helped facilitate this year’s program and said it was a resounding success.

“They were an energetic and enthusiastic group of new graduates, people were very supportive of each other, and they were eager to contribute to the discussion,” Andrea said.

“It was a pleasure to meet the graduates from across the state and support them to start their career in the disability sector.”

The professional development program focused on a number of key areas, including networking, setting professional boundaries, the NDIS, communication and selfcare.

Participants also learned strategies for having difficult conversations and were involved in discipline-specific sessions to help answer their most pressing questions.
