A legacy that is turning houses into homes
A remarkable act of generosity means Scope will soon be able to complete furnishing nine newly built specialist disability accommodation houses thanks to a substantial gift left by a dedicated supporter.

At Scope, we offer a range of services from Supported Independent Living to therapy and beyond, but one of our growing services is Social Connections, where clients can attend programs and activities best suited to their needs and interest.
In New South Wales, we have Social Connections locations in Cronulla, Blacktown, East Hills, Macarthur and Moss Vale, where clients can do all kinds of activities from surfing to cooking, and bushwalking to going to the footy.
Social Connections Manager, Georgina Campbell, explained how diverse the programs can be, how they are designed to ensure people with disability get the most out of daily life. “We offer a certain set of skill-building programs across all five sites, including cooking and travel training (so clients can travel in public independently with confidence), as well as a selection of sport and recreation programs,” Georgina explained.
“We give clients an opportunity to do things outside their regular, daily activities, like going to the footy. We definitely try to make it as fun as possible!”
“These programs are about ensuring our clients have a great day every single day. I love to challenge the easy things and do things that pushes the limits and give clients the opportunity to do things they’ve only dreamed of. We can do that here, and we hope to continue doing it every day.”
Community partnerships are popular as well, where clients are included in volunteer programs with local businesses and organisations, including the SES and near-by garden centres.
Striving for independence
Georgina shared a story about Hayes who attends the Cronulla site. Through his participation in the social connections program Hayes has found a place in the community where his disability has never held him back.
“Hayes is part of ‘The Weeklies’, a band at Social Connections Cronulla, and through the program he has developed his skills and performance to the point where he is now participating in open mic nights in the local community with his own band.”
Alex, a client from Moss Vale, has been working hard on his travel training, and he was able to independently plan a trip for himself and his mum to travel to the southern highlands by public transport for a special Mother’s Day lunch.
“His next goal is to travel independently to Canberra and stay overnight, which I look forward to hearing about!”
