Supporter News CEO Message
The past few months have been a very exciting time at Scope, and as our loyal supporters I am delighted to share our news with you.

A very generous gift left for Scope by a dedicated supporter has had a remarkable impact on the health, safety and well-being of almost 1400 residents living in Scope’s SIL houses.
For almost 30 years Mr Leonard Rogers donated regularly to Scope. He genuinely cared for people and wanted to make a difference that would improve people’s lives, both at the time the gift was made, as well as into the future. The gift Mr Rogers left Scope in his Will has done just this.
Scope has approximately 350 Supported Independent Living (SIL) houses across Victoria and NSW. As many have residents with increasingly complex medical and care needs, Scope initiated the ‘Supporting Clients with Complex Care Needs’ project, funded by Mr Rogers’ gift.
The project involved a dedicated nursing team visiting each SIL house to assess resident needs, simplify and translate medical information, and review health plans and medical appointment schedules. They also provided recommendations on the training required for staff supporting the residents with complex needs and where possible provided training and support to meet those needs.
Support for residents with complex care needs is now targeted in a more specific way with health issues being identified earlier. Staff better understand exactly what is required to support residents and they are more confident in their ability to do so.
Equally significant, the project further refined and embedded two essential tools that enhance resident care. The STOPANDWATCH tool helps staff recognise and respond appropriately to a resident when their health could be deteriorating. This tool enables early detection and timely responses to health concerns and has been acknowledged as a best-practice approach to proactive care.
The Hospital Passport provides hospital staff with vital information about a resident’s health and care needs during hospital visits. This tool offers a concise, accessible summary of key details, contributing to improved health outcomes and more seamless transitions of care for residents.
Mr Rogers’ gift is not just about money - it is about a legacy; one that has improved the overall well-being and quality of life for our residents, and one that will have an ongoing impact for years to come.
