Mealtime assessments

If you need help with safe eating and drinking, one of our speech pathologists can work with you to develop a plan to help you manage mealtimes. This is called a Mealtime Management (or safe eating) Plan.

The assessment includes:

  • 1-2 sessions to observe you eating and drinking
  • Written guidelines on how to provide safe mealtime support
  • Recommendations about what equipment you need to eat safely and independently (if required)
  • Basic training for your support staff and/or family
  • Return travel (within NDIS guidelines)

Supported Independent Living (SIL) assessments

Before you move into specialist disability accommodation, it’s a good idea to talk to a therapist. They’ll be able to help identify the types of support you’ll need when you move into your new home — and can also give you practical recommendations to make the move a success.

The assessment includes:

  • Initial interview
  • Formal assessment
  • Functional observations
  • Liaison with other professionals
  • Written report with recommendations
  • Feedback meeting to discuss report
  • Return travel (within NDIS guidelines)

Pressure care assessments

If you have reduced mobility, it’s important to think about pressure care. This helps you avoid bed sores and pressure wounds. Scope’s therapists can show you how to prevent and manage pressure injuries, and can prescribe equipment like pressure care cushions, mattresses, or overlays.

The assessment can include:

  • An evaluation of your needs, history and goals
  • Development of a seating or positioning plan
  • Prescription of pressure case equipment
  • Collaboration with your support, medical team and wound nurse

Assistive technologies

Whether you need new equipment or some simple modifications to your current set-up, our experienced team can work with you to find and use the best aids and equipment for your lifestyle.

We’ll work with you to set your goals, assess your needs, collaborate with equipment providers and other health professionals, apply for funding, and get you started with the new equipment.

Below are the types of aids, equipment and assistive technologies we can help you with.

Equipment assessment and review

Our occupational therapists can work with you to explore equipment to help you complete everyday activities comfortably and safely, such as:

  • Wheelchair or mobility aid
  • Specialised seating for armchair, recliner or activity chair
  • Personal care equipment such as a commode or shower chair
  • Transfer equipment such as a ceiling hoist, portable hoist and/or sling
  • A bed, mattress or customised sleep system
  • An adapted bicycle
  • A standing frame
  • A walker

Home modifications

If you need simple modifications to make your home more easily accessible — like rails, simple ramps, platform steps, or kitchen modifications — our occupational therapists can help with everything from drawings and plans to talking to builders.

Vehicle modifications

To travel safely in a vehicle, you may need to make some changes or modifications to the vehicle first. We can help.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

To enable you to communicate with others, we can assess your needs and support you in finding the right a communication aid, communication app, and/or speech generating devices.
