The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a valuable program designed to provide funding and support to Australians with disabilities. Whether you're applying for the first time or helping someone else, the application process can seem overwhelming. However, with the right guidance, it becomes much easier to navigate.

In this step-by-step guide, we will simplify the NDIS application process to help you understand what to expect and how to get started. We’ll walk you through each step so you can feel confident in applying for the support you need.

Step 1: Check your eligibility

Before you apply for the NDIS, it's important to determine whether you meet the eligibility criteria. The NDIS is available to individuals who meet the following requirements:

  • Age: You must be aged under 65 when you apply. If you're over 65, you may be eligible for aged care services instead.
  • Residency: You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa, and be currently living in Australia.
  • Disability: You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to participate in daily activities. Disabilities can include physical, intellectual, sensory, or psychosocial conditions.

If you’re unsure whether you meet the eligibility requirements, don’t worry - you can contact the NDIS or a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to get advice and help with the eligibility assessment.

Step 2: Gather required documentation

Once you confirm that you are eligible, the next step is to gather the necessary documentation to support your application. The NDIS will ask for information about your disability and how it impacts your daily life. Some of the documents you may need include:

  • Proof of identity: Birth certificate, passport, or other identification.
  • Medical evidence: A letter from your doctor, psychologist, or other healthcare professional that outlines your disability, its impact on your daily activities, and how it’s likely to affect you long-term.
  • Personal care reports: Any information about the support you currently receive and how it helps you manage your daily life.

Having these documents prepared ahead of time will help speed up the application process.

Step 3: Submit your application

There are several ways to submit your application for the NDIS:

  • Phone: you can call the NDIS directly on 1800 800 110 and apply over the phone with the help of an NDIS representative.
  • Email: download and complete the NDIS Access Request Form on your computer and email it to [email protected] with supporting information.
  • Mail: you can also download and print the application form from the NDIS website, complete it, and mail it to the NDIS at PO Box 700, Canberra, ACT 2601 with supporting information.

Regardless of the method you choose, make sure you have all your supporting documents ready to submit along with your application.

Step 4: NDIS eligibility check

Once you’ve submitted your application, the NDIS will conduct an eligibility check. They will review the information and documentation you’ve provided to determine if you meet the criteria. This process can take some time, typically up to 21 days.

During this period, the NDIS may request additional information or clarification from you or your healthcare providers. If the NDIS needs more details, try to respond as quickly as possible to avoid delays.

If you're approved for NDIS, you will be invited to proceed with the next step: creating your NDIS plan.

Step 5: Planning meeting

Once you’re confirmed as eligible, you will be invited to a planning meeting with an NDIS representative or a Local Area Coordinator (LAC). This is one of the most important steps in the process because it will determine the funding and supports you receive through the NDIS.

During the meeting, the NDIS planner will work with you to:

  • Discuss your goals and aspirations (e.g., living independently, finding employment, participating in community activities).
  • Identify the supports you need to achieve these goals (e.g., personal care, therapy, transportation).
  • Review the level of funding you will receive to access the supports.

Be prepared for this meeting by thinking about what you want to achieve and the supports that will help you. If possible, bring a family member, friend, or support worker to help guide the discussion.

Step 6: Receiving your NDIS plan

After your planning meeting, the NDIS will provide you with your personalised plan. This document outlines the supports you’re eligible for and the funding you’ll receive for different types of services.

Your NDIS plan will also specify how long it lasts (usually 12 months) and when you will need to review it.

If you disagree with any part of the plan or funding, you can request a review of the decision through the NDIS.

Step 7: Start using your plan

Once you receive your NDIS plan, it’s time to start using it. Here’s what you need to do next:

  • Choose providers: You can select registered NDIS providers to deliver the supports outlined in your plan. Research providers, compare services, and ensure they meet your needs.
  • Access funding: Depending on how your funding is managed, you can either work with the NDIS, a Plan Manager, or manage it yourself. Your plan will specify how your funding is allocated across the different support categories.
  • Start receiving services: With your plan in place, you can begin accessing services to help you meet your goals. This may include therapy, home modifications, or personal care services.

Step 8: Reviewing your plan

Your NDIS plan is typically reviewed every 12 months. During your review meeting, you’ll discuss your progress, whether your goals have been achieved, and any changes you need to make to your plan.

If your needs have changed, or if you require more or different supports, you can request a review of your plan at any time.

Make sure to track your progress regularly so you can effectively communicate your needs at the next review.

Tips for a successful application

  • Be prepared: Gather all your documents before starting the application to avoid delays.
  • Set clear goals: Think about what you want to achieve with the NDIS, and be specific about your needs.
  • Get support: Don’t hesitate to ask for help from family members, support workers, or Local Area Coordinators.
  • Stay in touch: If you need assistance or have questions at any stage of the process, reach out to the NDIS or your LAC for help.

Applying for the NDIS doesn’t have to be difficult. By following these steps, gathering the necessary documents, and being clear about your needs and goals, you’ll be on your way to accessing the support and services that will help you live a more independent and fulfilling life.

If you need help at any stage of the application process, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator.
